Book Review: Exit Interview by Kristi Coulter

Exit Interview by Kristi Coulter

A lot has been written about Amazon warehouse work. From Emily Guendelsberger’s On The Clock, to numerous articles created with the intent to show just how rough it is working on a giant, not-properly cooled warehouse. Until recently, Amazon’s headquarters, based in the Pacific Northwest, has been a mystery. Kristi Coulter’s Exit Interview drops that curtain and exposes just how the rest of Amazon functions. Hint: it’s not fun.

My Thoughts on Exit Interview

I went into this book ready to read all about how Amazon works from the inside out, and I wasn’t disappointed. Kristi Coulter left a well-paying, yet not quite exciting job in the Midwest to take a leap to the Northwest and work for Amazon. What she found was that it was tough to get to the next level of her career, despite working for the company for many years and in many roles.

What I found interesting wasn’t just the writing style that Coulter has, which makes you feel like you’re right there next to her, but the sheet amount of positions that she had while working for the company. She started out at one specialty, then moved to the foreign book division and later worked as a copywriter. Add in some misosgyny, constant work, tight deadlines, and it sounds like this is one place where the work quickly overtakes your life. I understand why Coulter escaped when she did.
